Coming Together

I have been working hard to arrange a place to live and find a company to move with.

The place to live started out as a pretty large challenge; Plymouth is a very rural community and didn’t have any on-line listings of apartments or houses to rent. I got the phone number of one place from another realtor in the area, but when I spoke with them I was told they didn’t have anything available. At that point I got worried, so I called Betty at the school. She’s been my main contact person since the beginning of the salary problems, and she works in the Human Resource office. I asked her if she knew of anyone I could call to find a place to rent. She said, “I’ll call you back in 10 minutes.” True to her word, she called back and gave me a list of 9 names. Betty is awesome.

I called everyone on the list. I left messages for three people, got busy signals at three, and talked to three. The first guy had an apartment for $425/month. It has two floors in it: upstairs is the bedroom and master bathroom, downstairs is living room, kitchen, and half-bath. He will allow cats, but no dogs. This is a major downfall. The second guy I talked to has one 3-bedroom house immediately available for $500/month, and another house that will be available by the time I move. The third woman had something very small available, and it was pretty expensive. I told them all that Jake would be contacting them to arrange a time Saturday to see what they have, and they seemed excited.

One of the people I left a message for called me last night and said that she had two 3-bedroom homes available. One was $425/month and the other was $400/month. She does not allow any pets. I told her that Jake would be setting up a time to see it, although she is my last choice at this point. At least at the apartment I can have my cat… which is absolutely mandatory.

I spoke with the guy who has the house to rent this morning and set up a time fairly early Saturday. I also remembered to ask about pets today and he said, “Oh, of course. So long as they’re not real destructive.” I laughed and told him that my pets weren’t, and that I really looked forward to hearing what the house was like from Jake.

So, hopefully Jake will see this house Saturday and it will be in good shape. If it is, I will be moving into a 3-bedroom house in Plymouth, NC. Soon after I get settled, I will get my dog.

I have two moving companies that I’m waiting for quotes on. I’m trying to save the wear and tear of actually driving a Uhaul 11 and a half hours… because Jake has a lot going on that weekend, and he’d be the one driving it. If either of the two companies I’m waiting on has a price comparable to Uhaul (and that’s not cheap), and will service Alfred, NY… I’m going to set it up to have them drive my stuff. It’d be so much nicer to road trip down with Jake and me in the same vehicle.

It’s coming together. Slowly but surely.

[edit]
I got a call from a company called Movex.  They gave me a quote of $950 to move my things… which is only $100 more than Uhaul.  As soon as I get my address in Plymouth I will be contacting Movex and arranging for them to deliver a truck so I can load it on July 14th.  I’m so happy that I found this company; they’re relatively new, but they have great customer feedback, and awesome prices.  So I’m going to go with them.  Hopefully they work out well
