Job Fair

As I mentioned previously, there was a job fair here in the county our house is in.  So I donned my black business suit and braved the 100 degree heat to drive to the school.  It was very close by, so I got there early.  The line was already long, even for the preregistered folks (like me).

I had never been to a job fair before yesterday, and I was surprised at how overwhelming it was.  There were so many people, and so much waiting in line to talk to potential employers.  Everyone was very friendly though.  I met a guy that’s from Saratoga, NY… which is the town half an hour from mine.  I gave my resume to about 10 people who had full time or part-time positions open.  If I could get two part-time spots that’d be just as good as having one full time, of course.  I had some great conversations with all the principals I spoke with.  All of them said that I should hear next week sometime.  A couple of them were just using the fair as a means to see who they wanted to officially interview.  Others were using it as their interview.  I saw the principal whose school I’d interviewed at on Tuesday, and we chatted for a moment.

All-in-all it went well.  I’m hoping that one principal contacts me.  He’s an elementary school guy, and said that he had made a recommendation for someone, but that she already worked at another school as a teacher and he really thought that her boss had convinced her to stay and teach.  He said that if she didn’t work out he would be calling me to come in and talk.  I liked him, and two of his teachers introduced themselves to me and we talked for awhile.  It seemed like a very good atmosphere.  I’m really hoping that I hear something early in the week next week.

So I guess there’s just more time to cross fingers.

Peach Cobbler

I made this recipe last night and it was absolutely wonderful.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups sliced peaches
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon or nutmeg
  • 1 and 1/2 cups Jiffy baking mix
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp. melted shortening.

Preparation:

  • Preheat oven to 400
  • Grease well a 1 quart baking dish
  • Combine peaches, sugar, and sinnamon.  Pour into dish.
  • Mix remaining ingredients until blended and drop by spoonful onto fruit.
  • Bake 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 and bake 10 minutes or until fruit is tender

You can substitute any fruit for the peaches, but I must say the peaches were fantastic.  Of course, they came to us directly from Georgia so they were quite tasty.

Home… and Work

I heard today that Patricia is home from the hospital.  She posted an entry in her blog and she sounds as if she’s in very high spirits and feeling much better.  This is fantastic news, as I’m sure you can imagine.

I had a surprise interview yesterday at 10:30am.  I had called the school to see if they were interviewing for the position, and the principal asked me to come in.  The meeting went pretty well, and she told me that she was waiting until after the job fair on Thursday to make her recommendation.  So I’ll be going to the job fair as well.  Hopefully between that interview, the job fair, and the interview on the 9th I will find something.  I so want to find something else; the thought of going back to that school really stresses me out.  I can do it, but I won’t like it.

So keep your fingers crossed readers.

All else is pretty good.  My Aunt and Sue will come back this afternoon to spend one last night in North Carolina.  I hope that they bring me a souvenir from the Paula Dean restaurant in Savannah.  That would be quite nifty.  I’m looking forward to next week.  Jake and I are planning a trip to the coast… we’ll stay over a couple nights and see all the lighthouses.  Steve is going to be watching the dog, so it’ll be great.

Send Thoughts

Last week Jake’s mom, my good friend, Patricia, underwent a hip replacement surgery.  The procedure went well, and she came home on Saturday.  She had been experiencing some bad cramping, but was doing relatively OK.

Today, however, we got word that she had to be hospitalized again due to severe pain and cramping.  The doctors have done tests, and are unsure exactly what is wrong.  Worst case scenario is another surgery, this time abdominal.

We are worried, but also optimistic.  Patricia is incredibly healthy and strong, not to mention she has the most positive outlook of anyone I know.  We know that she will be OK.  We’re hoping, though, that she won’t have to go through another operation.  She’s been through quite enough already.  Hopefully we’ll hear from her partner, Fred, again soon and hear some positive news.

So, keep Patricia in your thoughts if you’re reading this.  She has been such a wonderful friend to me since we first met, and she is Jake’s Mom.  She has a fabulous trip to Italy planned for September… so she needs to be well for that.  Send your positive energy toward Vermont.

Possible?

As I was checking my email just now, I had one from someone about a counseling position.  They said they wanted to interview me on the 5th.  As I was emailing back, my phone rang and it was the assistant principal that had emailed me, asking if that day was good.  Jake and I have plans to go to the coast for the 4th, so I asked if there was any way to move the interview to the following week.  She said sure, so I have a meeting scheduled for July 9th at 9am.

The school is about 37 miles from here, which mapquest lists as nearly an hour drive, but I’m sure they factor in the traffic.  I know that I can make the drive in about 40 minutes.  This is reasonable.

Keep your fingers crossed.  I want to get this job so very badly.
