Assessment

The gym I joined has a fitness assessment built in to your membership fee.  This assessment requires you to meet with one of the personal trainers and do some fitness tests as well as get taped to measure your various parts (waist, hips, bicep, etc!).  I was a little nervous prior to going, but as it turned out i had no reason to be.

My BP  was 100/80.  My resting heart rate was 60.  These are both in the “excellent” range.  Way to go heart!

My BMI was 30, which of course needs work.  I also am realistic enough about BMI and realize that according to BMI I “should weigh” about 135 pounds.  Anyone who knows me knows that this is far too little for my height and bone structure.  So while I know I need to lose some body fat, I also know that I don’t need to get upset about having a high BMI!   I knew this one would be bad, and it was… and all I plan to do is continue to bust my butt to make it better.  The report I got said that losing  6-19 pounds will improve this number a lot.  My aerobic fitness was also pretty low, but I already saw an improvement yesterday when I was on the elliptical.  So that will continue to get better as I push myself aerobically.

My bicep strength was really good… I was measured at 67 on a scale that only went up to 72!  Tickets to the gun show!

Back flexibility was also low, which was expected.

It was a really positive experience.  I’m actually looking forward to my next assessment in a couple months.

Limits of Spandex

Dear Fitness Clothing Makers:

I would appreciate it if you stopped making spandex clothing in any size above a 14 or 16. I understand that spandex is a somewhat ideal material from which to fashion workout clothes, but I see no reason for anyone that is a size, say 32, to be wearing spandex in public. To be completely honest, I don’t think there’s any reason for anyone that size to be wearing spandex ever.

But I digress.

I think if you stopped making spandex clothing in those sizes, people would stop feeling like they should actually wear spandex when they clearly shouldn’t be. Seriously. I know you make spandex pants in my size, but I would never actually wear them. Not until I drop 3 or 4 sizes. I have the common respect for my fellow man not to expose them to things like this… unfortunately not all of my fellow gym goers have this same respect.

It may also help if you develop a Public Service Announcement that discusses this serious issue. You could save people embarrassment. Most of all you could save people from having some serious emotional scarring after observing things of this nature.

Sincerely,
Kate
